Darvon has been on the market since 1950. It would never meet today's standards for FDA approval, but was "grandfathered in." Over the years the drug's makers have failed to warn patients and doctors of its substantial risks. And they have done nothing to counter misinformation about the drug's effectiveness.

In a 1982 study, for example, researchers explored physicians' perceptions of the effectiveness of Darvon. Although the scientific literature stated that the drug is no more effective than aspirin, nearly half of the doctors polled believed it to be more potent — misinformation that the drug maker did nothing to counter.
